Working and Winning Together

When working families and our jobs, health care and retirement security are under attack, we need the solidarity of a united labor movement on our side. Affiliating directly with the AFL-CIO enables more organizations to become part of that movement.

Organizations directly affiliated with the AFL-CIO:

  • Retain their autonomy;
  • Adopt their own constitution and bylaws;
  • Benefit from cross-union mobilization efforts coordinated by AFL-CIO state and local labor councils to support political, organizing, contract and legislative issue campaigns;
  • And make their own decisions about setting dues and endorsing political candidates;
  • But they have the benefits of being part of the nation’s largest and most powerful advocate for working people.

AFL-CIO membership provides:

  • Solidarity with the 56 unions of the AFL-CIO and their 10.5 million members, including 2 million members in Working America, its new community affiliate.
  • A voice—and a vote—at the table, with participation and voting rights on the national, state and local decision making bodies of the AFL-CIO.
  • Protection from debilitating and distracting attacks from other organizations.
  • Member benefits—from discounted goods and services for your organization and its members to access to continuing education and degree programs at the National Labor College and more.
