This summer, see more than the inside of a law library. Check out Law Student Union Summer.
Law Student Union Summer is a unique and exciting 10-week internship for law students that combines front-line legal work with grassroots organizing in real, ongoing campaigns by AFL-CIO unions in various regions of the country.
Students are assigned to contract or organizing campaigns with unions across the country. Based on the needs of their assigned campaign, they may be involved with: community outreach, member mobilization, corporate research, legislative and policy campaigns, contract negotiations and arbitrations, and legal research. Responsibilities may include interviewing workers and drafting memorandum with factual and legal analysis in connection with unfair labor practice investigations, wage and hour violations, discrimination claims, immigration issues, environmental regulations, consumer protection, workers’ compensation and/or other issues that may arise during an organizing or contract campaign. Participation in organizing activities is another primary component of the program, including canvassing, planning and implementing solidarity-building activities and participating in meetings and home visits. Travel may be required; work will vary from placement to placement.
These work experiences will be on-site, at locations throughout the country (NOT in Washington, D.C.). Participating students will receive a weekly stipend of $550; transportation and housing expenses also are covered. On-site supervision is provided by both attorneys and union organizers.
Applicants must have a demonstrated interest in the practice of labor law and may be first- or second-year students; students who have taken one or more labor law courses and who have experience in organizing and community activism are preferred. (See requirements.) Apply by sending an , cover letter, résumé, writing sample, law school transcript and three references (include name, title, address, phone number and e-mail address of references) to:
