The men and women who served our country in the military deserve more than lip service. They deserve the best.

Some 2.1 million union members, or 14 percent of all union members, are veterans of military service. The AFL-CIO is bringing together union leaders and members who are veterans to speak out to and hold government officials and candidates accountable to the needs of our returning heroes—not only for Labor 2008, but beyond.

All veterans need policies that:

  • Promote access to good jobs.
  • Protect their re-employment rights.
  • Ensure better education, as well as training benefits through an expanded 21st Century GI Bill.
  • Fully fund the Veterans Affairs health care program.

Unfortunately, time after time, our president has opposed increased funding for veterans' health care and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs—and Sen. John McCain has been right with him.

We respect John McCain's service—and urge him to respect ours.
