Letter to Representatives in Support of the Dream and American Promise Act of 2019

Dear Representative,

The AFL-CIO urges you to support the Dream and American Promise Act of 2019 (H.R. 6) and to oppose any motion to recommit. This legislation will benefit our entire workforce by providing a well-earned path to citizenship for working people who have made positive contributions to society for decades.

Recipients of TPS (Temporary Protected Status), DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) and DED (Deferred Enforced Departure) help to build, feed, serve, educate and care for our nation. They work in every state of the union and across a wide range of industries. For decades, we have rightfully welcomed and valued these members of our families, communities and unions.

We all will be harmed if vital workers are needlessly stripped of their rights and status. Congress must act now to avoid termination of TPS, DACA and DED protections, which would cause far-reaching damage in worksites and communities.

America’s unions continue to push for a broad path to citizenship for all the millions of people whose labor helps our country to prosper. Our entire workforce benefits when people are able to live and work without fear, and the Dream and American Promise Act takes a necessary step forward by extending permanent protections to Dreamers, DED and TPS recipients.

We urge you to support the Dream and American Promise Act and to oppose any motion to recommit. All working people deserve rights on the job and in the community and your vote can help us move closer to that more just future.

Sincerely,

William Samuel, Director
Government Affairs Department
