Letter Opposing Extreme Cuts Proposed by the House of Representatives

Dear Representative:

Today, the House will consider the Continuing Appropriations and Border Security Act, 2024 (H.R. 5525) in a misguided attempt to fund government operations after the fiscal year ends at midnight Saturday. We urge you to vote against H.R. 5525 and instead pass reasonable bipartisan legislation to prevent a government shutdown.

H.R. 5525 doubles down on the extreme cuts contained in the Republican spending bills, including reductions in funding for education, fuel assistance, supplemental nutrition assistance, air traffic safety, and cancer research. The legislation would also create a debt commission intended to bolster calls for cuts to Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security. The “border management” language in the bill will only make elements of our immigration system worse and increase the risks to the lives and livelihoods of working families.

Efforts to reach a bipartisan solution today may be the last chance to avoid a government shutdown and the catastrophic consequences that will follow. We urge you to oppose H.R. 5525 and instead pass a sensible continuing resolution to fund our government based on the June debt ceiling agreement.

Sincerely,
William Samuel
Director, Government Affairs
