Letter Opposing Michael Truncale's Nomination to the Eastern District of Texas

Chairman Charles Grassley
Ranking Member Diane Feinstein
U.S. Senate Committee on the Judiciary
224 Dirksen Senate Office Building
Washington DC 20510-6050

Dear Chairman Grassley and Ranking Member Feinstein:

The AFL-CIO urges you to oppose the nomination of Michael Truncale for the Eastern District of Texas. Mr. Truncale has a deeply partisan record that raises very serious concerns about his ability to be open-minded and fair to all litigants.

Mr. Truncale has been an active promoter of a highly partisan agenda. He has called for closing down the U.S. Department of Education, criticized entitlement programs like Social Security and Medicare, and declared unconstitutional the individual mandate under the Affordable Care Act.

If confirmed, Mr. Truncale will have the duty to apply the rule of law—even when contrary to his self-described ideology as a “conservative by conviction.” We are not confident that he will perform that duty. Americans deserve an unbiased judge in the Eastern District of Texas, and, as indicated by his record, Mr. Truncale is far from that. The AFL-CIO urges you to oppose Michael Truncale’s nomination to the Eastern District of Texas.

Sincerely,
William Samuel, Director
Government Affairs Department
