Letter to Senators in Support of the Nomination of Professor Cornelia Pillard for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit

Dear Senator:

On behalf of the AFL-CIO, I urge you to support cloture on the motion to proceed to the nomination of Professor Cornelia (Nina) Pillard to serve on the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit and to vote for confirmation. Professor Pillard is superbly qualified to serve on this court.

Professor Pillard has a stellar professional and academic career where she has demonstrated her fair-minded approach to the law and unquestioned integrity. She has practiced at every level of the legal system, including arguing nine cases before the U.S. Supreme Court, and has briefed dozens more. The ABA unanimously rated Professor Pillard as well qualified to serve as a judge on this court.

Professor Pillard is a nationally recognized law professor at Georgetown University Law Center, and she aids practicing lawyers on a pro bono and non-partisan basis as Co-Director of Georgetown’s prestigious Supreme Court Institute.  Her career demonstrates a commitment to public service, including as a government lawyer in the Office of the Solicitor General of the United States and as Deputy Assistant Attorney General in the Office of Legal Counsel.  She graduated magna cum laude from Yale College and Harvard Law School.

Professor Pillard is a lawyer of distinction who understands the important role of courts in upholding and enforcing the rule of law.  The AFL-CIO is pleased to support her nomination, and we urge her confirmation.

Sincerely,

William Samuel, Director
