On behalf of the AFL-CIO I urge you to sign on to H.Res. 1414, the Discharge Petition in support of the American Dream and Promise Act of 2025 (H.R. 1589), which offers a long-overdue path to citizenship for Dreamers and Temporary Protected Status recipients who are vital members of our workforce, our communities, and our unions.
Dreamers and TPS-holders have dedicated their lives to educating, serving, building, and caring for our country. Yet despite their invaluable contributions, hundreds of thousands of them have either been de-documented and stripped of their work authorization or lost their jobs as a result of unprecedented backlogs at USCIS or the administration’s refusal to process their renewal applications.
The recent Supreme Court decision allowing the administration to terminate TPS with virtually no legal scrutiny puts us on the precipice of mass economic disruption across many communities and industries, including construction, care, hospitality, food processing, and others as vital workers are needlessly ripped out of the formal economy. In a time of rising costs for working families, our country cannot afford more chaos and disruption. H.R. 1589 is a common sense solution that would help stem this damage, by providing a path for TPS holders and Dreamers to continue to live and work with the full rights they need and deserve.
The Dream and Promise Act has been a long-time bipartisan vehicle to provide much-needed stability to working families and the industries that rely upon them. Extending permanent protections to DACA and TPS-holders is both good immigration policy and good labor policy, and it represents an important step toward citizenship for all those whose labor helps our country prosper.
America’s unions are committed to working with Congress to create an immigration system that can help lift standards in our workplaces and ensure equal and enforceable rights for all working people. We urge you to stand with working families and support H.Res. 1414 and the American Dream and Promise Act today.
