The AFL-CIO Executive Council recognizes the distinguished service of Arthur Maratea, the former national president of TCU/IAM.
Throughout his career, Maratea has been a strong negotiator and tremendous advocate for workers in the transportation industry.
After working as a carman on the Long Island Railroad for a year, Maratea was promoted to telegrapher in 1989 and joined TCU Local 1444. Two years later, he was elected president of the local, and in 1994 was elected local chairman. In 2002, he was elected general secretary-treasurer of TCU Unit 167, and then as general chairman the following year.
Maratea later held elected positions with the national union, including national vice president and special assistant to the president, prior to becoming its 14th president in 2020.
As president, he helped guide the union through the devastating impacts caused by COVID-19 by focusing on the protections and safety of the front-line workers who made extraordinary sacrifices during the pandemic, and the public they served. He fought tirelessly for job training and placement programs that have provided meaningful futures and careers to so many young people, and delivered the strongest possible representation for his members at the bargaining table, in state legislatures, and on Capitol Hill.
Maratea was elected to the AFL-CIO Executive Council in 2021, and his clear vision and passion for job training opportunities were tremendous assets to the Committee on Member Education and Training.
Arthur Maratea has served America’s working people with honor and a deep commitment, and we wish him well in his next endeavors.
