AFL-CIO Executive Council statement

The Union Labor Life Insurance Company (Union Labor Life) was founded in 1927 by the American Federation of Labor, and its parent holding company, ULLICO Inc. was founded in 1987.

Union Labor Life began with a $400,000 initial investment by the American Federation of Labor, as organized workers were unable to obtain life insurance due to the risks associated with their jobs and were discriminated against because of their union membership.

The first policy was issued on June 15, 1927 to Matthew Woll, President of the Photo Engravers Union.  Currently ULLICO has grown from a one-product insurance company to a multi-line insurance and financial services holding company, offering protection and investment opportunity for unions, union leaders, union members, union trust funds and union employers through its insurance and investment products and services.

ULLICO exists today as it did at its founding for the sole and exclusive purpose of providing solutions for organized labor.  ULLICO is owned by shareholders who are international unions, district councils, local unions and Taft-Hartley pension funds.

Among the current members of ULLICO's Board of Directors, are the following Presidents, Secretary-Treasurers and President Emeriti of International Unions and Trade and Industrial Departments affiliated with the AFL-CIO:
