Vice President Carroll E. Haynes has been a tireless activist on behalf of the members of his union, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters (IBT). Elected in 1993 as President of the IBT City Employees Union Local 237, he has vigorously led his 24,000 members who work in New York City and on Long Island. Local 237, the largest of the IBT Locals, is comprised of white collar and blue collar workers as well as technicians and professionals whose needs have been ably met by Vice President Haynes in tough collective bargaining negotiations and energetic organizing. He was elected to a five-year term in 1994 and again in 1999.
After being recruited as a business agent in 1968 by Teamsters officials, Haynes was promoted to assistant director and then to director of the union’s Housing Division. He became a trustee in 1978, and in 1983, was elected vice president.
Vice President Haynes has served as one of three union representatives on the executive board of the New York City Employees’ Retirement System and on the executive boards of the New York State AFL-CIO and the New York City Central Labor Council. He has served as a vice-president at-large on the General Executive Board of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters and as director of the Teamsters Public Services Division.
Haynes was elected an AFL-CIO Vice President in 1995 and has contributed to the Executive Council as a member of the committees on Civil & Human Rights, Immigration, Safety & Occupational Health, and Strategic Approaches.
On behalf of the men and women of the unions of the AFL-CIO, the Executive Council expresses its gratitude and appreciation of Carroll Haynes for his service and devotion to the members of his union and to the labor movement.
