Executive Council Statement

On the Service of Ernest A. Logan

The AFL-CIO Executive Council recognizes the distinguished service of Ernest A. Logan, president emeritus of the American Federation of School Administrators (AFSA).

A native New Yorker, Logan was educated in New York City public schools. After graduating from SUNY Cortland in 1973, he worked in the city’s public school system for nearly 25 years, teaching English at P.S. 224 in Brooklyn before being appointed assistant principal and then principal at Brooklyn middle schools.

Logan then spent the second half of his career serving AFSA and its members, beginning in 1997 as a field service representative for the Council of School Supervisors and Administrators, AFSA Local 1. He later was elected to a number of leadership positions, including, in 2006, president of the more than 6,200-member local.

In 2018, Logan was elected AFSA president, a position he held until his retirement in 2022.

As president, Logan guided the union through the COVID-19 pandemic and was a fierce advocate for America’s school administrators. He was an unrelenting voice for civil and worker rights, and the right to a quality public education and used the power of the labor movement to take on the politicized attacks on America’s schools.

After his retirement as AFSA president, Logan remained a valuable member of the AFL-CIO Executive Council, where his vision and experience were tremendous assets.

On behalf of the nearly 15 million working people of the AFL-CIO, the Executive Council thanks Ernest Logan for his solidarity and decades of dedicated service to workers everywhere.
