As a third-generation ironworker, Joseph J. Hunt carried on in the tradition of his father and grandfather, building on their many years of hard work and leadership, when he was elected president of the International Association of Bridge, Structural, Ornamental and Reinforcing Iron Workers in 2001.
As the union’s leader, he steered the Ironworkers through a difficult period of political and economic turmoil with a steady hand and strong vision.
Hunt followed in the footsteps of his father and grandfather, both of whom held offices in Iron Workers Local 396 in St. Louis. After serving in numerous positions in his local union, he was appointed a general organizer and was assigned to international headquarters in Washington, D.C. In 1990, he returned to St. Louis and was elected president of the Iron Workers District Council. In 1994, Hunt was appointed vice president of the Iron Workers and in1998 he was appointed treasurer.
Hunt’s wise counsel and his commitment to and leadership of organizing have made him a valued and respected member of the AFL-CIO Executive Council. Over the past decade, Hunt has also provided invaluable service to the labor movement as an executive board member of the Maritime Trades Department of the AFL-CIO, an executive board member of the Metal Trades Department and a member of the Governing Board of Presidents of the Building and Construction Trades Department.
He also continues to serve as chairman of the board of Union Labor Life Insurance Company, a post he has held since 2006.
