Vice President Sonny Hall has devoted his career to improving the lives of the members of his union, the Transport Workers Union of America (TWU), in fighting for better and safer jobs and working to raise the technical skills and education of transit workers. Elected international president at the union’s 1993 convention, he began his union career as a TWU shop steward followed by service in a number of union leadership positions. His service led to his election in 1985 as president of TWU Local 100, with 38,000 members who operate public and private bus lines and the New York City subway system. That year, he also was elected an International Vice President of the union and in 1989, he was elected Executive Vice President.
Hall’s leadership and service to the Transportation Trades Department(TTD) resulted in his election as Secretary-Treasurer of TTD in 1995 and president of the Department in 1998. In recognition of his bold and tenacious leadership, the 35 affiliated unions of TTD have named him President Emeritus of the Transportation Trades Department.
Hall was elected an AFL-CIO Vice President in 1995 and has contributed to the Executive Council as a member of the committees on Political Education, Public Affairs, Safety and Occupational Health and the subcommittee on independent union raiding.
On behalf of the men and women of the unions of the AFL-CIO, the Executive Council expresses its gratitude and appreciation of Sonny Hall for his service and devotion to the members of his union and to the labor movement.
