WHEREAS, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters will be negotiating a collective bargaining agreement with United Parcel Service in 2002; and
WHEREAS, the agreement with United Parcel Service is the largest single collective bargaining in the United States covering more than 200,000 workers; and
WHEREAS, the outcome of this high-profile campaign will affect all of organized labor; and
WHEREAS, the successful 1997 contract campaign and strike at United Parcel Service was supported by the AFL-CIO, its affiliates and their members throughout the United States, won the broad support of the American public, and helped reinvigorate the American labor movement; and
WHEREAS, the 2002 contract campaign will build on the solidarity and strength demonstrated in 1997; and
WHEREAS, the Teamsters Union has devised a grassroots, member-driven campaign strategy that reflects the priorities of rank-and-file members through bargaining surveys distributed to all UPS Teamsters and through face-to-face proposal meetings conducted throughout the country; and
WHEREAS, Teamsters General President Hoffa has requested the support of the
AFL-CIO, its affiliated unions and their members for this important campaign and for the brothers and sisters at United Parcel Service;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Executive Council of the AFL-CIO, all affiliates and their members join together to pledge their support for the efforts of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters to achieve a strong contract for its members at United Parcel Service; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the full force and resources of the AFL-CIO will be summoned to assist workers at United Parcel Service in their struggle for fair wages, strong pensions, better working conditions and workplace dignity.
