Retiring longtime leader RoseAnn DeMoro recognized.
Bonnie Castillo, executive director of National Nurses United (NNU), was elected today as a member of the AFL-CIO Executive Council. Castillo takes the seat of RoseAnn DeMoro, who retired from her position at NNU earlier this month.
“RoseAnn has devoted her life to advance and protect workers’ rights and has been a powerful voice on our Executive Council,” said AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka. “Today, thanks to her activism and leadership, thousands of health care professionals have the freedom to negotiate a fair return on their hard work with their employer. Bonnie brings a long track record of powerful leadership that will be an important asset to our movement. We are proud to welcome her and look forward to working with her to build on the outstanding work achieved by RoseAnn.”
“It is an honor to join with leaders of the labor movement across the country who represent the long and proud tradition of advocating on behalf of all U.S. workers, their families and their communities,” said Castillo. “With an escalating corporate and far right attack on workers and our democracy, from Congress to Wall Street to many state capitols, the labor movement today has a solemn obligation to protect the rights and security of our people and our nation. On behalf of NNU, I am proud to have the opportunity to stand with them.”
In a statement issued today, the labor federation’s Executive Council lauded DeMoro’s contributions to the union movement and recognized her lifetime efforts as a labor leader.
DeMoro, who became NNU’s executive director in 1992, joined the AFL-CIO Executive Council in 2007 and served on the Legislative, Public Policy, Organizing, Political, Women Workers and Union Repositioning committees.
