Statement from AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka on the Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) Modernization Act of 2021, the Generalized System of Preferences (GSP) and Miscellaneous Tariff Bill Modernization Act of 2021, introduced by House Ways and Means Trade Subcommittee Chairman Earl Blumenauer today:
The AFL-CIO strongly supports the long-overdue reforms to the TAA and GSP programs that bring them more in line with the challenges working people face in the 21st century. Subcommittee Chairman Blumenauer, Chairman Richard Neal and the Democratic members of the Ways and Means Committee continue to show their commitment to America’s workers by introducing these forward-thinking bills that will do just that.
TAA is especially important to America’s workers in providing assistance when corporations decide to outsource jobs in order to exploit low wages and poor conditions in other countries. This legislation will expand eligibility, increase funding and ensure that workers who are terminated through no fault of their own have additional tools and support as they navigate re-employment.
GSP reforms also will help to improve labor standards abroad and support workers organizing in developing nations, including those who face intimidation, harassment or even violence for exercising their rights on the job.
America’s labor movement calls for the swift passage of this legislation.
