Working people across the United States have stepped up to help out our friends, neighbors and communities during these trying times. In our regular Service + Solidarity Spotlight series, we'll showcase one of these stories every day. Here’s today’s story.
Two back-to-back hurricanes devastated Puerto Rico and Florida last month. And while it will take years to fully rebuild from Hurricanes Fiona and Ian, the labor movement’s focus right now is on providing immediate relief to union members and communities who are suffering. All across the country, union members are giving what we can to help our brothers, sisters and siblings in need.
In Texas, where many people know the hardship that devastating hurricanes can cause, members of the maritime West Gulf Ports Council last week hosted a community meeting on union projects. Attendees brought donations to send to people who have been affected by the recent hurricanes.
Please join them in giving what you can to the Union Community Fund and sending needed supplies to the Seafarers (SIU) collection points for distribution in Puerto Rico. Working together, we’ve recovered from many disasters over the years; we can lend a helping hand to the people of Florida and Puerto Rico.
