(Washington, DC, Tuesday, April 12, 2016) -Today, an international delegation that visited Honduras from March 17 through March 21 for a fact-finding mission to ensure that the assassination of Berta Caceres is investigated in a timely and thorough manner, issued a reportstating their findings.
This delegation, formed of experts, political and civil rights leaders from several nations including a representative of the AFL-CIO, confirmed concerns that the Honduran government is not acting in a professional, transparent and impartial manner to hold those responsible accountable.
Among its top conclusions, the mission calls on the Honduran government to:
- Invite the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) to lead an independent commission to investigate.
- Assist victims in access to justice and protection programs.
- Develop effective public policy related to the persistent violence against those exercising basic rights.
- Halt the construction of the Agua Zarca dam and other infrastructure projects being built on indigenous lands against the wishes of these communities.
