Ramadan Mubarak..Blessed Ramadan
The AFL-CIO, a federation of 64 affiliated national and international unions representing nearly 15 million working people, sends greetings to our Muslim union members, their families and the Muslim community as the holy month of Ramadan begins.
Muslims will observe Ramadan from sunset on Tuesday, Feb. 17, until sunset on Thursday, March 19. During Ramadan, healthy adult Muslims fast daily from dawn until sunset, abstaining from eating and drinking. This discipline helps bring Muslims into a closer relationship with God and expresses their empathy for those who lack sufficient food.
As Muslims seek God’s compassion and mercy during Ramadan, they are taught by their Prophet Muhammad to practice it in their daily lives. This sacred time of fasting is the month of compassion. It is a time to do charity and be in solidarity with the poor and the vulnerable. The Ramadan fast ends with the joyous celebration of Eid.
The AFL-CIO supports and defends our Muslim union members, their families and the Muslim community in the practice of their faith, free from prejudice or discrimination. We reaffirm our unwavering commitment, as a labor movement, to freedom of religion as a basic human right to be strengthened and preserved for all faiths, especially in these challenging times. Eid Mubarak…Happy Eid
