AFL-CIO Announces New Hires for Public Affairs Team

Today, AFL-CIO President Liz Shuler announced two new senior members of the AFL-CIO’s Public Affairs team: Deputy Director of Public Affairs Lauren Miller and Director of Media Relations Isabel Aldunate.

Miller joins the AFL-CIO team following her time as communications director of the Institute of Politics at Harvard Kennedy School and interim director of its John F. Kennedy Jr. Forum after her nearly decade of service as senior adviser and digital director to Sen. Elizabeth Warren.

“The AFL-CIO is doing incredible work on behalf of workers and families across the country, and I am proud to bring my skills and experiences to help them expand the federation’s goals of growing union membership and building an economy that works for everyone, not just the wealthy and well-connected,” said Miller, the AFL-CIO’s deputy director of public affairs.

Aldunate joins the team from the White House Office of Management and Budget where she served as deputy associate director of communications, and prior to that worked on the presidential inauguration, the Biden for President campaign, and for then-Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer.

“I am honored to join the AFL-CIO at such a critical time, to amplify the voices of workers across the country and raise awareness on workers and worker power,” said Aldunate, the AFL-CIO’s director of media relations.

Lauren Miller most recently served as communications director at the Institute of Politics at Harvard Kennedy School and interim director of its John F. Kennedy Jr. Forum. For nearly a decade, she served as a senior adviser and digital director to Sen. Warren on her Senate campaigns and in her Capitol Hill office, building her digital program from scratch and helping her become one of the strongest voices in politics for working people. From 2013–2014, she was also a senior director at Bully Pulpit Interactive, where most notably she led its work on former Labor Secretary Marty Walsh’s first mayoral campaign in Boston and served as the campaign’s digital director. Prior to joining the Warren campaign in 2012, Miller was the director of online communications at Blue State Digital, the groundbreaking BarackObama.com company.

Isabel Aldunate most recently served as the deputy associate communications director for the White House Office of Management and Budget. Prior to that, she was the surrogates communications director for the Presidential Inaugural Committee and handled surrogate communications and Hispanic media for the Biden for President campaign. Prior to her work on the Biden campaign, she was the deputy national press secretary for then-Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer and served as deputy press secretary for then-Mayor Andrew Gillum during his bid for governor of Florida. Aldunate began her political communications career as a communications assistant at the National Association of Real Estate Brokers and has served in communications roles with the Maryland Clean Energy Center, Climate Action Campaign and the American Council on Renewable Energy. She received a bachelor’s degree in communications from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County and a master’s in political communications from American University.
