AFL-CIO President Liz Shuler released the following statement in response to the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in Food and Drug Administration v. Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine:
Reproductive health care is essential to working women’s economic security, and the AFL-CIO is pleased to see the Supreme Court sustain the FDA’s drug approval authority in FDA v. Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine. By dismissing attempts to restrict access to mifepristone, the court prevented extremists from advancing their longtime goal of robbing women of the freedom to make their own health decisions and protected the critical authority of the FDA to do its work based on science—not politics.
The nation’s highest court rightly held that these ideologically driven plaintiffs had no business attempting to frustrate the work of the FDA or women’s access to health care. We believe all women should have quality health care, including contraception and reproductive care, regardless of where they work or live. Access to prescription drugs and medical treatment is a fundamental collective bargaining issue, and the AFL-CIO remains committed to fighting for the best possible deal for all working people.
