Statement by AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka in recognition of funeral services being held for the Charleston victims:
This is a very sad day as we commemorate those who lost their lives to a horrible act of racial violence. It is also a day in which we must all challenge ourselves to look forward with renewed determination towards creating a national community that is inclusive of people of all races, backgrounds and religions. The labor movement’s thoughts and prayers are with the loved ones of the victims as well as with the Emmanuel AME Church community. The nine brave souls who lost their lives in Charleston last week will not soon be forgotten and their memory will inspire us to work relentlessly to protect the American Dream for everyone.
