AFL-CIO Executive Council Calls for Senate Rules Reform if Minority Continues to Obstruct

Today, the AFL-CIO Executive Council issued a statement calling on the Senate to enact swift and necessary changes to procedural rules standing in the way of enacting a Workers First Agenda.

“For decades, working people have paid the price for corporate-first government,” said AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka. “Time and again, the Senate’s arcane rules have been used to keep working people from claiming the basic rights and dignities that we’ve earned. For corporations, the filibuster was done away with long ago, never holding up billions in bailouts or trillions in tax giveaways. It’s only when working families demand our fair share that those in power hide behind procedure. Every day, working people are paying the price for that double standard with our health, our lives and our livelihoods. It’s time for rules that work for all of us.”
