(Washington, DC - April 29, 2015) – The AFL-CIO has named Amaya Smith as Deputy Director of Communications, National Media Director. Amaya, who has been a member of the AFL-CIO Communications Department since 2009, will work closely with the Director of Communications and will run the federation’s national media outreach efforts with the goal of promoting the importance of unions and collective action to the general public.
Prior to joining the AFL-CIO, Amaya served as a Regional Press Secretary for the Democratic National Committee. Previously, Amaya worked on the Hill as a Communications Director for four years. Amaya also worked as the South Carolina Press Secretary for the Obama for America campaign during the 2008 Democratic primary. Originally from Silver Spring, Maryland, Amaya’s passion for the labor movement stems from her mom who is a registered nurse and progressive activist as well as her brother who is an electrical worker.
