AFL-CIO: Passage of Respect for Marriage Act Long Overdue

Statement from AFL-CIO President Liz Shuler on the passage of the marriage equality bill:

America’s labor movement applauds the passage of the Respect for Marriage Act, which enshrines long overdue protections for marriage equality into federal law. At a time when we have witnessed the rolling back of previously established rights, this bill is critical to guaranteeing that same-sex and interracial couples will not live in fear that their marriages are under threat.

The bill ensures everyone will receive the economic benefits of a legally recognized marriage such as health care, work status and Social Security, no matter their sex, race, ethnicity or national origin.

Everyone should have the right to love who they love with dignity and equal treatment under the law. As this legislation heads to President Biden’s desk, we encourage the president to sign the bill without delay.

Today, and every day, the labor movement remains committed to advancing civil and human rights.
