AFL-CIO President Liz Shuler issued the following statement on Judge Susan Crawford’s victory in the Wisconsin Supreme Court election:
The AFL-CIO congratulates Judge Susan Crawford on her well-deserved victory in this hugely consequential election. Tonight, the working people of Wisconsin rejected the attempts of the richest man in the world to literally buy this election, choosing instead to embrace a Circuit Court judge who puts workers over corporate CEOs and billionaires. The results of this election will reverberate far beyond Wisconsin. Voters in this bellwether state are fed up with the agenda of the ultra-wealthy that’s wreaking havoc across our country, cutting vital services we all rely upon and putting thousands of public service workers in the unemployment line.
I am immensely proud of the Wisconsin labor movement for coming together to make this victory for working people possible. Led by the Wisconsin State AFL-CIO and united by a common purpose to protect and advance workers’ rights in the state, union members turned out to support the candidate who stands for basic fairness and the fundamental rule of law. There is no shortage of attacks on workers’ rights these days, and this shows that labor is at our best when, united, we mobilize and fight back.
Wisconsin has seen its fair share of attacks on so many of our rights over the past 15 years. Many of those issues will come under direct review of this court. Workers’ rights, women’s rights, voting rights—indeed our very democracy—were on the ballot tonight, and working people got the job done to move Wisconsin forward.
