AFL-CIO Reaffirms Commitment to Count Every Vote

(Washington, D.C.)AFL-CIO President Liz Shuler issued the following statement in advance of Election Day next week:

Democracy is the foundation of America’s labor movement. Every day, across states and industries, union membership allows workers to have a say in our jobs, our contracts and our lives. As we approach Election Day, the AFL-CIO is committed to ensuring the same equality and representation for every voter in this country.

No matter who our union members—and the American people—choose to vote for before the polls close next Tuesday, we urge every eligible American to cast their vote. And we stand united with organizations across the political spectrum in denouncing any form of violence, intimidation or harassment of those attempting to peacefully complete their civic duty.

When the polls close, the AFL-CIO is committed to protecting the sanctity of our electoral process and ensuring that every vote is counted and every ballot collected. Because this will be a historically close election and states follow rigorous procedures to certify their vote results, that process will take time. We may not know the winner of the election for days or longer. But what’s important is not getting this done fast—it’s getting this done right. What matters isn’t what’s announced on election night. What matters is that the winner chosen by the American people, in accordance with the rule of law, takes the oath of office next January in a peaceful transfer of power.

As Americans, we’re proud of our democracy. Now is the time for us all to do our part to protect it. The labor movement will do our part to make sure every vote is counted and the results are respected, and we invite those who share this commitment to free and fair elections to join us.
