Statement from the AFL-CIO Sports Council on the release of wrongfully imprisoned WNBA star Brittney Griner:
Today we are elated to celebrate the long-overdue return of WNBA star Brittney Griner, who is safely on her way home to her wife, family and teammates after spending nearly 10 horrific months wrongfully imprisoned in Russia.
The extraordinary support for her release from players unions, athletes and labor activists—led by the Women’s National Basketball Players Association (WNBPA) and Bring Our Families Home Campaign—were critical to ensuring that Griner’s name never faded from the headlines and her cause and freedom remained a top priority.
We are grateful to the Biden administration for its hard work in ensuring her freedom, and for every person who wrote a letter, held a sign and joined us in this fight.
And to Brittney Griner: Welcome home. You were missed, and the entire labor movement is so thrilled to have you back.
