Statement by AFL-CIO Executive Vice President Tefere Gebre in response to the Voting Rights Advancement Act:
The systematic racism that the Voting Rights Act was passed to repair still exists and in some ways has expanded. The labor movement is committed to giving a voice to the underrepresented and I applaud Senator Leahy’s introduction of the Voting Rights Advancement Act today which aims to ensure that every American has access to the ballot box. It is past time for Congress and state leaders to work together to remove the barriers that prevent people from exercising their basic right to vote.
