In honor of National Apprenticeship Week and the first National Women in Apprenticeship Day, AFL-CIO Secretary-Treasurer Liz Shuler released the following statement:
With the cost of higher education continuing to soar and the economy recovering at a snail’s pace, working people, particularly women and young people, are turning to apprenticeships as a secure route to the middle-class. Apprenticeship and work-based learning programs can help create the skilled workforce our country will need for the future.
Unions have invested significant resources to help working people achieve economic and employment security through workforce development and skill training. Joint labor-management organizations in the building and construction trades provide apprenticeship training and upskilling at more than 1,600 training centers. The labor movement is dedicated to providing these benefits for America’s working people today and every day.
