Action Comes on Heels of Extremist Effort to Ban Chanting, Singing, Clapping
(June 11, 2014 Washington, DC) – Next Monday, June 16th, North Carolina’s labor movement will spearhead one of the last Moral Mondays of the 2014 legislative session. Members of the labor movement and the Forward Together Moral Movement will demand North Carolina lawmakers protect the rights of the state’s working men and women. The protest comes on the heels of efforts by extremist conservatives to silence protestors for creating any “imminent disturbance.” This could include singing, clapping or speaking loudly.
Moral Monday actions have brought together a broad coalition around issues like cuts to unemployment insurance, due process protections for teachers, denial of Medicaid and disenfranchising voters.
“Moral Monday protests in Raleigh have been a powerful tool for conveying the demands of everyday citizens in North Carolina and we will not be silenced,” said MaryBe McMillan, Secretary-Treasurer of the North Carolina AFL-CIO. “The rights of working men and women will be the focus of one of the last Moral Monday protests this legislative session. The labor movement has been a central force for worker’s rights as well as civil rights. We will continue to empower workers and ensure that our state’s legislative policies work for everyone, not just the wealthy and corporations.”
