Statement by AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka on the Senator Stabenow and Peters amendment to the Energy Policy Modernization Act S.2012 that would provide funding to Flint, Michigan:
For the people of Flint, nothing is more important than having clean and safe water right now. This amendment to the energy bill will start to build a water system people can rely on. No amendment is more important or urgent.
From local unions delivering clean water to plumbers from around the area stepping up to the task, working people across the state are banding together to do what it takes to help their communities. Now, it’s time for politicians to come together and join the fight. This amendment won’t solve every problem or prevent similar tragedies in the scores of other vulnerable cities, but it’s the right step towards a solution. Congress should take up this amendment, pass it now and not keep families in Flint waiting any longer.
