Statement by AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka in solidarity with public school teachers striking in West Virginia:
Nothing is more important to our future than the quality of our children’s education. Teachers are the backbone of the education system and deserve the resources needed to inspire the next generation. A top-tier education, in West Virginia and across America, requires top-tier talent—and that requires an investment in our teachers.
The continued debate happening in Charleston is movement in the right direction and a testament to the activism of teachers in West Virginia. On a call yesterday, our Executive Council gave unanimous support for the teachers. The AFL-CIO and our 12.5 million members are proud to stand with them in this fight.
