Press Release

Working People Re-Elect Pro-Worker Champion in New Jersey

Statement from AFL-CIO President Liz Shuler on the New Jersey governor’s race:

The labor movement is proud to have played an instrumental role in re-electing New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy for another term in office. Union members and our families showed our support by knocking on thousands of doors, phone banking for countless hours and getting out the vote, and the impact was clear in this victory. Union members have worked closely with Gov. Murphy on transformative funding for New Jersey students, including funding $200 million for New Jersey preschools, investing $150 million to ensure schools could safely reopen and closing the digital divide that threatens to leave too many students behind. Murphy has shown his deep commitment to public workers by becoming the first New Jersey governor in 25 years to fully contribute to the state pension system, ensuring that public workers receive the benefits they are owed for their years of service. He has proven himself to be a true champion for working families, and we know he will continue to fight for us in his next term.
