AFL-CIO President Liz Shuler released the following statement on Acting Labor Secretary Julie Su’s announcement on new project labor agreements:
Workers have achieved a victory thanks to the Biden administration’s efforts. Acting Secretary of Labor Julie Su recently announced a new federal rule mandating project labor agreements (PLAs) for all federal contracts exceeding $35 million. This ensures that employees are prioritized on the jobsite and have the security and peace of mind they deserve. PLAs are known to benefit both union and nonunion workers by preventing worker exploitation and ensuring accountability in construction projects that directly result in wins for the economy and our communities. They also contribute to the smooth progress of projects, avoiding costly delays resulting from labor conflicts or shortages of skilled workers. President Biden’s executive order on PLAs for federal construction projects signaled positive changes for workers, and the recent rule announcement further solidifies this victory.
