Service & Solidarity Spotlight: More than 400 Lab Professionals at LabCorp Win a Union

Lab professionals at Labcorp held a union election from March 1 to 3, where 434 workers voted to join the Oregon Federation of Nurses and Health Professionals, an affiliate of the American Federation of Teachers (AFT). The new union members work at labs in Portland, Oregon, and Salmon Creek, Washington, and include medical technologists, lab specialists and phlebotomists. The workers are the latest in a wave of health care unionization.

Service & Solidarity Spotlight: More Than 2,000 Oregon Health and Science University Research Workers Join AFSCME

Oregon AFSCME submitted union authorization cards signed by more than half of the 2,000 research workers at Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU) on April 26. Under the state law, once Oregon Employment Relations Board (ERB) verifies the cards, OHSU will be required to recognize Oregon AFSCME as the workers’ bargaining representative. The unit includes workers who conduct lab experiments, order equipment, file paperwork, and care for animals used in studies. It will not cover faculty members who apply for grants and lead research.

Service & Solidarity Spotlight: Workers at Portland Hilton Secure New Contract After Two Years of Bargaining

UNITE HERE Local 8 reached a tentative contract agreement that raises wages and restores automatic daily room cleaning at the Hilton and Duniway hotels in downtown Portland. The contract covers about 125 workers across the two hotels, including housekeepers, cooks, bellhops, and reception clerks. The contract would provide a 50-cent-an-hour raise every February and August though Feb. 1, 2027 for non-tipped workers and includes retroactive raises dating back to August 1, 2022.

Service & Solidarity Spotlight: Tillamook Bus Drivers Secure 5-Year Contract

Workers at Tillamook County Transportation District in Oregon unanimously ratified a five-year contract that raises starting wages about 22% over the life of the contract. Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Local 757 represents 26 workers, including drivers, dispatchers and vehicle maintenance employees. Other benefits include adding Juneteenth as a paid holiday, providing workers with five days of paid bereavement leave and doubling the rate of annual vacation accrual for workers in their first two years on the job.

Service & Solidarity Spotlight: Oregon Public Broadcasting Workers to Join SAG-AFTRA

Oregon Public Broadcasting workers informed management of their intention to form a union with SAG-AFTRA. Approximately 80% of workers at Portland-based Oregon Public Broadcasting and KMHD Jazz Radio signed a petition to management. The unit will consists of on-air hosts, reporters and video producers.
