Alliance for Retired Americans Hosts 2022 Retirement Security Symposium

More than a dozen speakers from unions, government agencies, young workers and other groups shared strategies to address the continuing retirement security emergency in the United States at the Alliance for Retired Americans' Retirement Security Symposium: An Intergenerational Seminar. Attendees discussed pensions as well as other cornerstones of retirement security, including Social Security and Medicare. Several dozen attendees attended in person at AFL-CIO headquarters in Washington, D.C., and scores more participated virtually.

President of Alliance for Retired Americans Tells Senate Committee Social Security Must Be Expanded

Robert Roach Jr., president of the Alliance for Retired Americans, testified on June 9 at a Senate Budget Committee (SBC) hearing focused on expanding Social Security for all beneficiaries. Entitled “Saving Social Security: Expanding Benefits and Demanding the Wealthy Pay Their Fair Share or Cutting Benefits and Increasing Retirement Anxiety,” the hearing laid out the case for increasing benefits as millions of seniors struggle to make ends meet. Alliance for Retired Americans Facilitates Partnership with Labor Movement, SUNY to Help Students with Family, Financial Obligations

Building on a mentorship program that the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) established with Aviation High School in Long Island City, New York, the Alliance has brought together the American Federation of Teachers (AFT), the United Federation of Teachers (UFT) and IAM in a partnership with the State University of New York (SUNY) that provides pre-enrollment credits toward a college degree for high school students. The credits are for extra classes taken in a high school aviation program.
