Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act of 2012

May. 16, 2012 | H.R. 4970
The Republican bill to reauthorize the 1994 Violence Against Women Act weakens many current protections in the law. It excludes lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) victims, erodes important provisions for immigrant victims' safety and gives abusers additional tools with which to harm victims. It fails to address the crisis of violence against American Indian women by not recognizing tribal court authority to hold perpetrators accountable and fails to include key provisions needed to help reduce violence against young victims of violence. The bill passed.
